The 2023 English Nationals 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Andrew McErlean won a gold medal at the 2023 English Nationals in the wheelchair event. Having previously won tournaments in sports like wheelchair tennis and rugby sevens, the 53-year-old former soldier brought his racquet skills to pickleball and won in his debut tournament at Bolton Arena.

McErlean, who had previously won gold at the 2014 Invictus Games, said he loves the sport, emphasizing its inclusive and enjoyable nature.

Following the US, Pickleball is getting increasingly popular in the UK, attracting around 12,000 regular players and spread across over 450 venues nationwide. The National Championships at Bolton Arena saw a significant increase in attendance, with 682 athletes participating compared to 430 in the previous year.

McErlean, who was left paralyzed after a car accident in his late teens, appreciates pickleball for its accessible and friendly community, considering it a fantastic way to stay active and agile on the courts.

Matthew Perry Was ‘In a Really Good Place’, Says Pickleball Coach 💔

Matthew Perry, known for his role in "Friends", was finding joy in pickleball before his passing. The 54-year-old actor, who had a history of addiction, had taken up pickleball in recent times, considering it a healthy outlet. His coach, Matt Manasse, revealed that Perry was dedicated to the sport and even used it to support others going through similar challenges.

On the day of his passing, Perry played pickleball, but cut his session short due to fatigue. According to his regular partner, he had been feeling more tired than usual in the past week. Later, at home, he asked his assistant to pick up a new iPhone and prescription glasses. Upon the assistant's return, Perry was found unresponsive in his hot tub. While the cause of his death has not been disclosed, authorities have ruled out foul play.
